I felt relived to see all moms and Red Dogs crossed the river bravely.
川を渡り切った何組かのバイソンの親子を見てほっとしたのもつかの間
When I looked closer, I found a Red Dog curled up on a sandbar in front of me.
ふと近くをみると、目の前の砂州にバイソンの子どもが、ひとりでうずくまっています
It must have been drifted away from its mother due to this strong river current.
I didn't see its mother near by. Did she give up her own baby and followed her herd?
Bison calf looked its fellow bisons crossing the river, but didn't make a move.
It looked very tired and weak.
If it stays here, it will be a prey for wolves or a coyote.
急流に流されて、お母さんとはぐれてしまったに違いありません
近くにお母さんらしきバイソンの姿はなく
お母さんは子どもをあきらめて、群れと一緒に移動してしまったんでしょうか
うずくまったまま、川を渡る他のバイソンたちに目をやりますが
立ち上がる気配はありません
このままだと、餓死するかオオカミやコヨーテの餌食になるか・・・
I watched this calf for a while, but I had to return a hotel to check out.
I had to go. Before leaving, I put my hands togethe and prayed: I wish the best thing will happen to this calf.
しばらく様子を見ましたが、ホテルのチェックアウトの時間が迫っていたので、行かなければなりません
その場を離れる前に、手を合わせて「この子にベストなことが起こりますように」と心の中で祈り終わった途端
As soon as I finished my prayer, to my surprise, the calf stood up!
Umbilical cord still hanging down, it must have be born only few hours ago.
うずくまっていた子が、立ち上がりました・・・！
まだヘソの緒がついています
How tough and unforgiving Nature is...
生まれて間もないのに、この急流を渡らなくちゃならなかったなんて・・・
なんという自然の厳しさ・・・
The calf looked at crossing herd and took a couple of steps, but it was not ready to face another challenge.
"You can do it!" "This time, you will make it." "Go, boy! You can do it!"
With the utmost reluctance, I left there and started driving back to the lodge.
I came back to the same sandbar after checking out the lodge, there was no Red Dog any longer. I'm telling myself even to this day: That calf must have regained its courage and crossed the river to reunite its mother.

川を渡っている群れのほうを見たり
少し歩いたりしていたけれど、まだ川を渡ろうとはしません
「がんばれ！今度はきっと渡れるから！」
「できるよ、きっと！」
と声を掛けて、後ろ髪を引かれる思いで、その場を離れました
ホテルをチェックアウトした後、またその砂州に戻ってみると
あのバイソンの子どもの姿はありませんでした
勇気を出して、川を渡って、お母さんと再会したに違いない、と信じています
